Fancy bulbs are popular, and for good reason: they look cool, and they help you see better. But, beware! Not all bulbs are what they seem to be. TPO Bulbs cut through the crap and deliver quality at a fair price.
Some unscrupulous dealers will try and sell you "mega bright" bulbs or some other hype--some of them cost a small fortune. Well, be careful! Not only can these kinds of bulbs get you into legal trouble, but they can damage your bike as well. You can't get extra brightness out of a light bulb without burning more electricity in the process--it's a simple fact of physics. More electricity means more heat and a higher load on your electrical system. The wrong kind of bulb can cause wires or plastic parts to melt. TPO Bulbs don't have that problem. They meet OEM specs for both current draw and operating temperature.
Others will try and pass off "high color temperature" bulbs as better than others. Some claim their "5000 K" bulbs are the brightest around. This is outright false advertising. "K" is a measure of color temperature--this is "closeness to white" and has nothing to do with light output whatsoever! Ask for a comparison of true light output, such as luminous flux (measured in units of Candelas). You'll never see one because those "mega bright" bulbs are no better than OEM.
Still others will advertise "55 watt bulbs that perform like 125 watts". Sound too good to be true? Well, it is! Only a 125 watt bulb has the light output of a 125 watt bulb; it's simple physics. This "marketing trick" is done by changing the focal distance of the light bulb. They have more power in the center of the beam but less power at the sides of the beam. This is downright unsafe because it compromises your peripheral vision--and makes you less visible to other motorists. We motorcycle riders are hard enough to see already.
